Ketchikan - Port #1

In Port 7 am - 3 pm
Also in port:  Coral Princess

Things to do

 Fishing.
Fishing excursions are very popular in Ketchikan, and there are two main types. Visitors can opt for a salmon fishing excursion (arrangements can be made to ship the catch home) or go bottom fishing for rock fish and halibut, an excursion that's often coupled with a lunch onshore (of the catch) at a "fish camp." Both options also provide an excellent opportunity for wildlife spotting.  I have not listed any fishing trips on this page, but can give you websites to look at if you want to go fishing.

 Totems and History.
Parks like Ketchikan's Potlach Park feature re-created Native Alaskan villages with traditional tribal homes and hand-carved totem poles. A guided visit is one of the more reasonably priced Ketchikan excursion options. Passengers can pick up some stories about native mythology -- like the bizarre origin of salmon -- and watch carvers demonstrate totem construction.

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show
Celebrates Ketchikan's logging heyday. Watching pros compete at log rolling, axe throwing and pole climbing makes even a rainy day entertaining. The area is heated, covered and cushions on the bleachers. The sometimes corny show lasts about an hour, leaving plenty of time for shopping -- the port's shore activity of choice.

The show is $35 + tax for adults and half price for children 3-12.  Infants up to 2 are free of charge.  The cruise lines set their own pricing and most are about the same as our ticket cost.  We have no control over their pricing but we do encourage you to utilize their shore excursion department as often shows will be sold out months in advance because of cruise ship sales alone.
Our show is centrally located just a few minutes walk from the cruise ship pier, closest to pier 1.  From pier 1 it is 2 minutes walk, from pier 2 it is a 4 minute walk, from pier 3 it is an 8-10 minute walk and from pier 4 it is a 15 minute walk.  However, if your ship is moored at dock 4, bus transportation is provided free of charge.  One of our representatives will be on the pier at your ship 30 minutes prior to each show to show you the way to get there.  It's very easy!

Fisherman Tour
Fans of TV's "Deadliest Catch," which follows boats searching for lucrative king crab through treacherous waters, will enjoy the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour. The tour takes place on the 107-foot Aleutian Ballad, a former commercial fishing boat immortalized in season two of the show after it was savaged by a rogue wave. During the tour, which is technically unaffiliated with "Deadliest Catch," the crew expounds on fishing, tells tales of near death at sea, offers a ship tour, pulls up shrimp, crab and octopus using creature-specific gear, and points out other marine life along the way.  An adventure so real–you can hold it in your hand!  A one of a kind ‘reality tour’ allowing guests an authentic first-hand view of an Alaskan fishermen’s life at sea. You will be educated & inspired as our fisheries come within your grasp. Stay warm and dry as you share an experience unlike any other.   Animals seen only by those bound to the sea are placed in a live tank before being released into the wild. Have your camera ready to capture the king & snow crab, octopus, prawn & shark, to name a few.

Misty Fjords Air Tour
Some of nature's most majestic work in Alaska is a short flight from Ketchikan, in the Misty Fjords National Monument.  See Ketchikan Alaska’s Misty Fjords wilderness from the air and touch down to feel its colossal beauty with all of your senses. This unique landscape and the living things in it are protected in Misty Fjords National Monument … 2.2 million acres managed by the U.S. Forest Service as wilderness since 1980.   Fractured granite walls, scoured by glaciers thousands of years ago, plunge thousands of feet into
deep fjords. Misted mountains lift snowfields and wildflowers above tree line. Impossibly green ancient trees clutch steep slopes. High valleys cradle dark lakes. Waterfalls cascade out of rock clefts to disappear into forest slopes.   You're as close as can be on our Misty Fjords tours. On your way to Misty Fjords, pilot Steve Kamm provides a live interactive narration of the fascinating natural and human history of the area. Also unlike a pre-recorded narrative, all passengers are equipped with voice-activated headsets which permits the pilot and our guests to converse back and forth during the flight.   We'll make a breathtaking flight through Misty Fjords. You'll see 3,000-foot granite walls and lush
mountaintops up close. Steve will call your attention to the spectacular Alaskan wildlife often seen in the Misty Fjords and Tongass National Forest, including brown and black bears, mountain goats, humpback whales and bald eagles.  We'll touch down on a high, remote mountain lake or saltwater inlet; depending on mountaintop weather conditions (we call it "misty" for good reason).  After taxiing to shore, you'll be able to take priceless photos and breathe in the freshest, most fragrant air anywhere. On those occasions when wildlife is close by on shore, photo opportunities will be afforded right from the floats of the plane!
One aspect of our Misty Fjords tour that sets us apart from other Ketchikan flightseeing services is the uniqueness of each trip. Weather conditions permitting, we can alter trips depending on your preference to land near orcas, bears in the wild, or spend as much time as possible on a remote mountain lake. It’s your tour.   When you take to the air for the return to Ketchikan from your Misty Fjords flightseeing tour, you're taking away memories of a magnificent place.
Sea Wind Aviation    Tour Includes: 1:15 hour flight time with a 15 minute shore stop on an alpine lake. All passengers have voice activated headsets to communicate with the pilot and each other, and ground transportation is complimentary.

Glacier Fjords Tour   This is the tour for those who want it all: a complete Misty Fjords tour; a slow, dramatic flight over spectacular blue
glaciers; and a landing on a remote, Alaska wilderness lake.   First we fly through thrilling Misty Fjords; our tour features Rudyerd Bay, the most scenic fjord in the Misty Fjords National Monument. We ascend from the fjords and fly slowly over massive Soule Glacier and nearby rivers of blue ice grinding through granite valleys. The tour cuts over to the big Chickamin River and we land on a remote lake; our favorite is gorgeous Leduc Lake. You’ll have an opportunity to leave the plane and indulge your senses as your pilot Steve Kamm cuts the engine. The return trip takes us back above a cross-section of this magnificent backcountry ... so save some room on your camera.

Ketchikan Taxi Cab Tours
Filling the demand for inexpensive yet knowledgeable, personalized, narrated tours of Ketchikan. We operate two vans and carry a maximum of six per van for a total of up to 12 people.  Our excursions offer the independent traveler a relaxed, intimate (1-6 people)
experience to view the many attractions on our magnificent island.  Some of the wondrous sites in Ketchikan are Totem Bight State Park, Saxman Native Village, the historical downtown, the Tongass National Rainforest, and selected points on the island to view salmon, eagles, and bears. With your limited time in mind, we will put together your own special experience. An example of a 2-3 hour excursion could be a visit to Potlatch Totem Park and Saxman Native Village, then a loop through downtown to view the boardwalk streets, salmon returning to spawn, the infamous Dolly’s House and various other historical totem poles scattered throughout. Our excursions are very flexible and vary day
by day, hour by hour. The weather is unpredictable, wild life is seasonal and the tides in southeast Alaska can range from a few feet to over 25 feet!  We tell our groups in a 3 hour tour we will cover about 3-6 different tours that the cruise ships offer all rolled into one complete tour of our island. No buses, no lines, and plenty of time for photo-ops, bathroom and snack breaks!  To get an idea how inexpensive a private, personal excursion can be, here is an example of cost (per person) for each van.
Ketchikan Taxi Cab Tours    (907) 254-7286
http://www.ketchikantaxicabtours.com/
Our price is US$74 per hour per van, therefore:
          - 4 people = $18.50 each per hour
          - 5 people = $15.00 each per hour
          - 6 people = $12.50 each per hour
Therefore-5 people, 3 hour tour, would be $222 or about $45 per person.

Ketchikan by Classic Car
Classic Tours offers personalized tours in the "happy days" comfort of my snazzy '55 Chevy. My classes during the 20 years I taught in Ketchikan schools were fun, and so are my Classic Tours! I share my knowledge of Alaskan Native cultures, totem poles and art. I can tell you about our eagles and salmon, and equally interesting stories about Ketchikan's pioneers and lifestyles, past and present.   The Totems Tour is a visit to Saxman, a Tlingit Indian village, and home of splendid totem poles in a park-like setting. As we stroll through the park I'll explain the thriving Native culture and how the people lived in this awesome land long before America purchased Alaska.  Their lifestyle was fascinating! As with all cultures, a way of life is dictated by food sources. With an abundance of food from the rain forest and the sea, early peoples in Southeast Alaska developed complex and high art forms. We will see and discuss the artistic components and gain an understanding of this remarkable art.  With the totems as our guide,we'll learn how to identify an eagle, raven, bear, frog, and beaver. I will share with you, in pictures, the carving and steaming of a cedar canoe and the raising of a totem pole. And, as a special treat, I'll introduce you to my favorite Native
Alaskan totem pole carver!   Our tour also includes an overview of Ketchikan's historic past. As we drive by Creek Street, known as far south as San Francisco for its bawdy atmosphere, we'll talk about its colorful side. And we'll discuss the Ketchikan of today.   With a glimpse of life in these parts, you'll gain some insight into the heart of Ketchikan.
           Classic Tours
http://www.classictours.com/      2 hours    $109 per person ( 2 person minimum )  Includes sales tax and admission to parks and museums

This tour includes the Totems Tour and more...
Leaving the Totem Park at Saxman, we'll drive to the gravel road where we find ourselves in the midst of the rainforest. We'll learn to identify the coniferous hemlock, spruce and cedar trees that have played important roles in our community's development. And, I'll take you to an 'eagle tree'. At the very top of this gigantic Sitka spruce is an aerie or, as locals call it, an eagle's nest. If we're lucky, an adult eagle may be perched on the edge of its huge nest. Or, perhaps a glimpse of an eaglet!  This majestic bird is my favorite. Eagles mate for life and are loving parents, sharing egg sitting duties and, after hatching, bringing food to the nest. And their song! It's a trill to experience!    Rounding out our tour, we'll poke into some of the nooks and crannies of my special city--places where tour buses never roam. Like a worn wooden plank street, one of Ketchikan's oldest, that yearns to reveal its history. All but forgotten, this rattling narrow plank street remains just as it was at the turn of the century...over the muddy tide flats, and ending in backyards.   Capture the flavor of Ketchikan from the eyes of a long time resident who loves living here and easily shares experiences. Most of all, we'll have fun.
3 hours  $139 per person (2 person minimum)  Includes sales tax and admission to parks and museums.

Wildlife, City & Saxman Native Village Tour
Saxman Native Village  One of the most popular sites in Ketchikan is the Saxman Totem Village. This is Ketchikan’s largest totem park with 29 authentic totems carved by Tlingit and Haida natives. The poles were moved here from the original site in the 1930's and have been restored by native carvers. These totem poles are a must see when visiting Ketchikan.
Herring Bay & Wildlife   The next part of your journey will continue on to Herring Bay, a quaint area that takes you far away from the crowds and people. A small inlet cove that will allow sites and sounds of the beautiful wildlife that only Ketchikan can offer. During Salmon season, Black Bears, Eagles, Herons and Seals are often spotted in this area. Be sure to keep your eyes wandering and your cameras close!
Rainbow Falls   Your next stop will include a visit to Rainbow Falls. Immerse yourself in the beauty of a 100 foot waterfall surrounded by a rainforest. This hidden treasure is well known by the locals, but not by tourists.
Dolly's House/Creek Street   Your last stop of the day will be at Creek street, where your guide will talk about the lady’s of the night of years ago.  You’ll then have the option to go through world famous dolly’s house museum or we’ll return you to your ship.

Ketchikan Highlights & Totem Tour
3 Hours - The Ketchikan Highlights Tour begins at the cruise ship dock. As we go through the city to Totem Bight State Park, your guide will point out various places of interest, including the canneries and wildlife while you enjoy sixteen miles of breathtaking waterfront. Questions are always welcome!
Totem Bight State Park    This seaside park of totem poles holds a special charm. As a Sourdough tour guide narrates the legends of the Tlingit and Haida totem poles, you'll walk along a path in a lush rain forest to the beach. The many totem poles dot your paths as you enjoy the quiet serenity of the park. There is also a Native clan house. We'll take you inside and tell you how the people used to live years ago.
Russian Museum    Another attraction of the park is the Russian museum featuring a magnificent, historic collection of guns dating from 1535-1868. Included in the collection is the third-made Gatling gun made by Mr. Richard J. Gatling himself. The Russian museum also has displays of mammoth tusks, furs and ivory. There is a delightful curio shop adjacent to the museum.
Ketchikan City Highlights   On our way to Saxman, we'll go through Ketchikan and see eagles, canneries, the ladder salmon use to swim up Ketchikan creek to spawn, the city park, and other interesting sites.
Saxman Native Village   Saxman was founded in 1894 and was the site of a Presbyterian mission school. In the mid-1930's the people of Saxman, with the help of the federal Civilian Conversation Corps, arranged their totem poles into a formal park. It is the fifth most popular attraction in Alaska.  There are several famous totem poles in the Saxman park including the historic Abraham Lincoln totem pole and the William Seward pole which memorialized his 1868 visit to the area. Seward was responsible for the United State's purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. There are 34 totem poles at Saxman Native village and each one has its own unique story and history.  We will also see a clan house and a carving center where totems are made. The carvers are usually working as we tour. The master carver in Saxman is internationally recognized and his work is in demand around the world. You can see many of his totem poles displayed throughout Ketchikan.
Dolly's House/Creek Street    When we return to Ketchikan we will stop by the historic Red Light District on Creek Street. We will see Dolly's House which was a famous brothel operating until the middle of the 20th century. Your tour includes free tickets to Dolly's house. You can end your tour at this point or continue with us to the dock which is just two blocks away.

 Ketchikan museum hopping.
The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center (50 Main Street) has an interactive rain-forest gallery and a terrific gift shop for informational buys, from maps to guidebooks. Also check out the Totem Heritage Center (601 Deermount Street) and the Tongass Historical Museum (629 Dock Street).

Outside Ketchikan
             Three must-sees are

Totem Bight State Park (10 miles north),

                              Potlach Park (near Totem Bight)

Saxman Native Village (2 miles south).

At Potlach and Saxman, you can watch Native carvers at work.

Shopping in downtown Ketchikan.
The most interesting area -- both for historic value and good shopping -- is Creek Street. Not a street at all, this boardwalk winds along Ketchikan Creek and was once the locale for all the area's brothels. Now it's home to artsy galleries like Soho Coho (5 Creek Street), which sells a variety of higher-end crafts, from gorgeous velvet scarves to watercolors to soaps; adjacent is the Alaska Eagle Art Gallery where Pendleton blankets with Indian themes are a standout, as are silver pendants and bronze sculptures. Upstairs is Parnassus, an interesting book store with a great selection of Alaska-oriented tomes. Try Sam McGee's A Taste of Alaska (18 Creek Street) for regionally made foodstuffs, from honey to barbecue sauce to soaps, lotions and ulu knives.

Another interesting "shopping" area is a line of galleries along Stedman Street such as Blue Heron (123 Stedman Street), which has Alaskan crafts, including locally carved totem poles, and Golden Eagle Gifts (123 Stedman Street) for state-made coffees and teas.
